QC 35 II - automatically starts iTunes when sound disconnects from iphone and sound enabled on MacOS

The QC 35 II headphones (with the latest firmware update installed) will automatically "connect" bluetooth to my iphone and my MacOS (v10.14.5) system. Right after connecting, I don't hear any sound on my iphone, even though the bluetooth list of devices clearly says the headphones are connected. I have to fiddle around with various apps to get sound - the most reliable way to get sound from the iphone is to start a phone call. Then I get sound from any source on my phone.  BUT, when the call is ENDED, immediately iTunes is opened up on my Mac and the last selected tune starts to play!  This is infuriating!!  Make it stop!!!

How do I modify this behavior?  There is nothing in my iTunes settings that indicates I can control this behavior via the app. This happens on two different Mac systems.

Thoughts and Flowers accepted!

So, there's really 2 problems I am trying to solve.

  1. Get sound to initially and consistently work on my iphone that is blue-tooth connectes (so says both the Bose app, and bluetooth settings.
  2. Stop the immediate initialization of the iTunes music app on my Mac system when a phone call is ended.

Hello whoreallyknows,

Thanks posting and welcome to the community, I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your QuietComfort 35 II headphones. I completely understand how frustrating this must be for you, I would be more than happy to help you with this today. You mentioned that you have iTunes open on your computer this might be causing the issue you are experiencing, so I would recommend closing the iTunes app then re-pairing to see if the issue still occurs.

Please let me know how you get on!

Kindest regards,

Zoe C - Community Support

Re: QC 35 II - automatically starts iTunes when sound disconnects from iphone and sound enabled o...

Thanks for the welcome and responding to my cry for help, Zoe C.

I should have been more clear that iTunes is not running when this happens. As a matter of fact, it just happened a few minutes ago, and I had Quit iTunes from the last time it happened earlier this morning. Another call came in on my iPhone (iTunes not running on my connected laptop) and when the call was over, iTunes started up and began playing a tune.  And, when I open iTunes manually, a tune does not start playback at all. So, the behaviour as a result of opening iTunes on my laptop, by the bluetooth device, after a phonecall on my iPhone, is very different.

I haven't had a chance to do a bluetooth re-pairing. Will report back once I have done that.

Hello whoreallyknows,

Thanks for getting back to me and clarifying that for me. I found some troubleshooting for the specific issues you are having provided by Apple, check out this article and try some of the troubleshooting steps suggested.

Please let me know how you get on.

Kindest regards,

Re: QC 35 II - automatically starts iTunes when sound disconnects from iphone and sound enabled o...

I have the same issue here:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • Mac OS Catalina 10.15.4
  • Bose QUIETCOMFORT 35 Series 2
  • firmware 4.5.2

I often use my headset connected to my Macbook Pro AND my Android phone so that I can listen to music from my computer while I work, and still answer incoming phone calls.

A few minutes ago I once again had this issue where at the end of a phone call, Itunes (recently renamed "Music") keeps opening on my Macbook Pro, for no reason.

I do not use Itunes, and would uninstall it if I could.

I saw the Apple Community thread @Zoe_C linked to, but it is now obsolete, so I created a new one.

Any news on the Bose side?

Re: QC 35 II - automatically starts iTunes when sound disconnects from iphone and sound enabled o...

I'm having the same issue with the Bose Headphones 700. I have my iPhone and MacBook connected. When I finish a call, the Bose headphones apparently send a 'play' command to the MacBook, so that it re-starts whatever music I was listening to. If I had been listening to music before the call, that'd be fine. But usually, I wasn't, so it just starts random music out of the blue. It sounds like a minor thing, but when you have to quickly re-pause music multiple times a day because a £300 pair of headphones have crappy firmware ... it doesn't feel like the kind of luxury experience Bose advertises.

Re: QC 35 II - automatically starts iTunes when sound disconnects from iphone and sound enabled on M

I have exactly these 2 issues and its rubbish. I bought these to use for working from home. I want to answer the phone while sitting at my computer and have the sound through my iphone - If I am having a conference call I want it through my Mac - at NO TIME EVER do I want the Queen movie to start automatically. As the previous user said for £300 I think this should achievable?

Re: QC 35 II - automatically starts iTunes when sound disconnects from iphone and sound enabled on M

Ok after much faffing about I think I have solved both of these.

(I should say I m using BOSE 700)

First I upgraded to Catalina on my mac

This then gives you the option on Apple Music to choose your audio device and I selected internal speakers not Bose (which were ticked automatically) obviously its as easy as easy to change that option if I actually want to hear music through the headphones and I don't know how this would work if you were listening to music but didn't want to to restart but I don't listen to music while working so no prob for me.

Then for the phone thing I turned off iPhone link on my face time initially I also had to turn off the video link to the Bose but I now have that turned on again and the double tap is working fine.

So basically when I get a phone call the headphones aren't confused as to who to connect to.

Now this is possibly a pain if you want to  use face time but again I generally take calls on my phone while using my Mac so this works best for me. If I want to use FaceTime with them then I know to turn it back on again...

So its not entirely seamless Bose actually but it is now doing what I want it to do...

Now I just have to work out why FaceTime on my phone isn't using the headphones... (which it wasn't before I did the above) and we are laughing.....

Re: QC 35 II - automatically starts iTunes when sound disconnects from iphone and sound enabled on M

I thought I'd hit the jackpot seeing your answer - finally, someone with answers! But I tried it and it didn't work, and perhaps the different models is why. I'm using QC 35 II and my iPhone and macbook pro immediately opens "music" as soon as a call ends. I tried undoing the checkmark next to the speakers on it my macbook pro (it's a 2020 macbook pro so automatically Catalina 10.15.5, and my iPhone is a 6 but is on the most updated OS right now)...and it not only immediately opened "music" after my next call, but started playing the next song that was up.

So...is this an Apple or Bose issue? As I was setting up my Macbook, I was having some other error messages so reached out to them about this issue as well -- the tech support person had never heard of this issue before. However, I'm seeing a lot of Bose folks having this issue.

It doesn't happen with the QC 35 though, the ones my partner has. Maybe just an annoyance I have to deal with...is it worth calling Bose and walking through with someone? Just unclear on whose end the issue is from.

Re: QC 35 II - automatically starts iTunes when sound disconnects from iphone and sound enabled on M

I can confirm both issues on my Bose QuietControl 30 AND SoundSport, which both have the described behaviour.

By the way, it does not matter if I end a Slack Call (on my Mac) or if I end a phone call (on my iPhone). In both cases, iTunes starts up and plays a Song 😞
