Quiet comfort 35 replacements asking to send in I.D.

I recently contacted bose about my quiet comfort headphones the agent was unable to fix the issue over the phone so as they were in warranty was advised to send them back for a replacement so I did so at ups drop off point a week went buy and no update so I contacted them and was advised they received a empty box and headphones missing and was informed I need to send in I.D. Proof of purchase and declaration confirmation I shipped the faulty headphones has anyone had this issue before why they asking for these documents
