Solved! Solution.
Hi
Thought I'd follow up. The flight back 2 other people had the same problem. One was using Bose the other unknown. I'd say it's the entertainment system in the plane, not the headphones. They've worked flawlessly since then.
So I'm going to close this thread.

My first flight ... had exactly the same problem. I would not say that was ‘great news’. If the audio cable doesn't work on most airplanes, that’s pretty disappointing ... and blaming the airplane is not an incredibly satisfying answer.
I could get sound ... but only if I carefully turned the audio cable in the socket. Every time I changed position in my seat, I had to readjust the cable. I think the audio cable is too small so it doesn’t make good contact. My wife had similar problems ... if I can’t use the headphone for inflight entertainment ... I’d say that was a Bose problem.
Hi Chez Provence,
Thanks for reaching out to us today. You can get an adapter for airlines here.

Those adapters came with my previous headsets. My problem was with a ‘single’ hole connection ... the Bose audio cable does not connect properly. It does not ‘snap in’ as the old ones did, connection is not secure, requiring constant fiddling to get correct sound. Is this normal? Are airline 3.5 mm audio connections actually different?
