There could be a few things affecting the Active Noise Cancellation in your new QC35's. The headphones must be turned on to cancel noise and reproduce audio from the connected source. The switch on the right ear cup should be in the On position with the green LED illuminated. We would also recommend trying the headsets in a different environment and making sure they fit snugly around the ear.
