Firmware 1.6.5 Announcement and discussion

Available today - July 25, 2018

Customers will be notified through the Bose Hear app when the firmware update is available. Please install the update.

Hearphones firmware update 1.6.5

You need Bose Hear app version 1.3.0 or later to update your Hearphones to firmware version 1.6.5 or you can download it directly from the Bose Updater at http://btu.bose.com

NOTE: After the update completes, your Hearphones may become unresponsive. If so, please connect to a charger until the amber light comes on (less than 30 seconds). You can then disconnect from the charger and your Hearphones should operate normally.

For best results, please follow these steps to ensure your Hearphones stay connected to the phone or tablet running the Bose Hear app.

  • Charge your Hearphones to 100% before you install updates
  • Disconnect your Hearphones from the charger, make sure it is on, and place it beside your phone or tablet.
  • Use the Bose Hear app Settings to set auto off to NEVER. You can put it back to your preferred setting after the update.
  • Keep the Bose Hear app in the foreground on your phone or tablet. It's okay if it's running in the background but if you close it or force-quit this update will have to start over when you start the app again.
  • Keep your Hearphones beside the phone or tablet during the update. This can take up to an hour in total. We're doing this to maintain a good connection. Otherwise, you could walk out of range or encounter interference that can break the connection and force the process to restart.
  • Check back after an hour to see if the update has completed.

To get the latest version of Bose Hear, go to the App Store or Google Play and search for Bose Hear.  Depending on the settings on your device, the Bose Hear app my update automatically. Otherwise, you must choose to install it.

When you open the updated Bose Hear app, it will automatically download firmware version 1.6.4.  Once that is downloaded you can update your Hearphones.

Firmware 1.6.5

Release notes:

Firmware version 1.6.5 :

  • You must update your Bose Hear app to version 1.2.0 or later to be compatible with this firmware. Version 1.4.0 or later is recommended for full functionality
  • Enables microphone for communications for select Apple computers

Bose Updater - if you prefer not to use the Bose Connect app

Hearphones firmware updates are available at http://btu.bose.com (for Windows and OSX)

You may be asked to install the Bose Bluetooth updater sofware. Once you do that, you will be able to update the firmware in your Hearphones.  This will be much faster than updating over a Bluetooth connection with IOS or Android.

Please reply to this post if you have any question about these updates.

Thank you.

Re: Firmware 1.6.5 Announcement and discussion

Can you permalink firmware updates on the support page? I keep forgetting you don't have a windows app to update the FW.

I end up hunting around the website for the "windows updater" then stumble on this notification and finally aha!.... A permalink  will save me 10 min figuring this out everytime, as it's non-standard method. Like a memory jog. We may be older and more forgetful, but hey, we got to see the Rolling Stones when they were young. Now paying for it. LOL

PS Doing the FW update via browser/USB is fine... just uncommon.

When I use phone/BT, it just loops forever.

Hi sounder321,

Thanks for the great suggestion.  In the meantime, now that you have posted in this thread, you should get an email notification when there are updates here.

My hear app said to update my phone, which I did.  Is there a way to see what virson of firmware is on the hearphones?  Just like to verify it updated.

Re: Firmware 1.6.5 Announcement and discussion

Two questions:

1) Does anyone know if the web updater works in Linux? I know it says WIndows and Mac, but that's because "nobody" uses Linux  so compatbility is rarely mentioned. Has anyone actually tried it?

2) In the Hear app (I'm using Android, if it matters), what is "Preparing update", and why does the remaining time seem to decrement at the rate of about a minute (displayed) for every 5-10 minutes of (actual) elapsed time?

Re: Firmware 1.6.5 Announcement and discussion

Hi Barefoot Mike,

The fastest way to do an update is to use the Bose Device Updater using a PC or MAC. That process is supported on macOS and Windows. You can try it using Linux, but we don't support the process on that platform.

Using the Bose Hear app, you are using both the web and Bluetooth to transfer the update to your Hearphones.  Unfortunately, this is a longer process than using USB instead of Bluetooth for the last leg of the connection. If there are interruptions to the Bluetooth stream this can slow the process. I've noticed that the time display may get out of sync with real-time, but eventually the process completes.  I know, this can test your patience.
