How do I get my Bose universal remote to operate my Soundtouch 135 system?

My dog destroyed the original remote that came with my Soundtouch 135 system. I ordered the Bose universal remote, which looks exactly the same as the damaged remote, but the system does not respond to the new remote. What steps do I need to take to make sure this works?

Thank you for your inquiry. It sounds like we may just need to pair your new remote to your system. Assuming you purchased the correct replacement remote for the Lifestyle Soundtouch 135, you can use the following steps to pair your new remote:
 
1.    Turn the system on 
2.    Hold the remote near the control console 
3.    On the remote, press and hold OK and at the same time press and hold Mute on the console. Hold both for five seconds. The power LED on the control console blinks when pairing is complete 
4.    Release the buttons 
5.    Press any remote button and verify that the power LED on the control console blinks with each button press
