Lifestyle 28 Series III No sound and steady popping sound

So I scored a great deal on a Lifestyle 28 system recently but unfortunately it is not working. So not exactly a great deal.  While I can get audio output through the 3.5mm headphone jack on the side of the console, the speakers attached to the Acoustimass Module do not work and only emit a steady popping sound.

Trouble shooting thus far:

Tested all speakers individually on my Sony receiver, all work great.

Replaced the 9 pin cable between the console and the subwoofer, no dice.

I am inclined to believe there is an issue with the acoustimass module vs the console as it outputs sound through the 3.5mm headphone jack on the side. Any clues as to what to do next would be appreciated.

Hey @twodollarjim, thanks for posting, and welcome to the Bose Community!

It's a shame that you've not been able to experience the full potential of your Lifestyle 28 III. I'd love to help with getting this up and running.

Do the speakers only pop when you try to play audio, or do they pop when no sources are connected to the control console?

Does the Acoustimass module appear to be working, besides the lack of output to the speakers?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Re: Lifestyle 28 Series III No sound and steady popping sound

The steady popping sound happens regardless of whether the receiver is outputting any audio or in standby. It’s just a pop sound steadily every second.

Is there another trick to tell if the Acoustimass Module is working? There is zero vibration on the subs when audio input is applied.

@twodollarjim Thanks for confirming this. Do you see any LEDs on the Acousttimas Module? (Understanding LED indicator status lights and information)

So I don’t even realize there was an LED on the Acoustimass module. It is super faint and actually pulses slightly brighter in sync with the popping sound coming from the speaker. Is the Acoustimass power supply shot?

Thanks for checking, twodollarjim.

Have you tried connecting the Acoustimass module to a different power socket/outlet? There are two different states of LED that will represent different things. Which one are you seeing on your module?

 Normal operation.

This could be caused by a damaged or improperly seated audio input cable, or it could indicate a hardware problem in either the Lifestyle console or bass module.

Re: Lifestyle 28 Series III No sound and steady popping sound

So I am having the same problem, speakers making a clicking noise with no components turned on.  The LED light is flashing green only.  I have already switched outlets and a new surge protector but it still does it.  This happens randomly, not sure what else to look for.

Re: Lifestyle 28 Series III No sound and steady popping sound

Hi 21212121,

We're sorry to hear this is happening.

Is there a possibility you could send a video depicting the popping you are hearing? Does it have a detrimental effect on audio performance or is it just a generally undesirable nuisance when no sound is playing?

I'll look forward to hearing from you!

Re: Lifestyle 28 Series III No sound and steady popping sound

Hi Jeff,  It doesn't affect the sound while we are watching TV, music or a DVD.  I usually hear when we are not in that room.  It don't happen all the time so getting a video could be hard but will try.  Just not sure why it is making this noise unless it is just an old system and time to replace. I did just get the serial# from the unit not sure if that will help you.  [REMOVED BY MODERATOR]

Re: Lifestyle 28 Series III No sound and steady popping sound

Thanks for getting back in touch.

(I have removed the serial as it is against our Community Guidelines to share serial numbers on the forum.)

There are many reasons why this could be occurring, including faulty/connections, old wiring, nearby interference, etc. Before giving up on the system, it'd be worth checking different cables to see if that makes a difference. Does the popping occur on a specific speaker for example? If so, try using the wiring from another speaker to see if the problem persists.

Audio input cables (The cable that links your bass module to the console) can also be obtained from local support. If there's a fault on this cable it could potentially be causing irregular sounds.

If you're able to get a video, that'd be fantastic, but the I hope the above points give you a good starting point for finding a resolution.

I'll look forward to hearing from you!
