Hyperacusis Treatment

After having a neck injury, I have been diaganosed with hyperacusis (sound sensetivity). My audiologist says I can go thru a $3,000.00 2 year treatment plan of wearing hearing aids set on a Red Noise or Ocean sound moad setting everyday all day long in order to try to reastablish the nerve connection between my inner ear and my brain. I'm thinking that their has to be a cheaper way of doing this by perhaps downloading some Red, or Ocean noice to my I-Pod, and listening to that noise thru my Bose Noise Cancelling headsets. Just wondering if anyone else has tried this method of treatment?  Thanks
