Bose L1 Pro8 versus S1 + Sub1

I am just curious about how one would expect these two to compare for various small-medium band applications (thinking about a pair for various music projects with a max of 4 players with Bass guitar using their own cabinet and only some very minimal drum micing).  I own a Pro8 and have used a single S1 in the past (sold it) but am wondering which would be better in a pair (adding subs for the S1s).

The Sub1 is a 7” x 13” racetrack just the same as the bottom of the Pro8 so I assume the base will be fairly comparable in a 1x or 2x application.

The S1 has 1 x 6” driver and 3 x 2.25” where the Pro8 has 8 x 2” drivers.

Just reading between the lines I would believe the Pro8 having more drivers in different directions would spread things around a bit more and the 6” on the S1 might through a little more/better in the forward direction.  I am also wondering if the use of 2 x Pro8s vs 2 x S1s + Sub1s might act a little differently with regard to comb filter or other weird phase issues (thinking the narrower throw S1 might act a little better or not need to be quite as wide).

I also think the S1s would be a little more versatile (since you can use them alone) where the Pro8s would be slightly simpler/more compact to setup.

Sub1 bass will outperform the bass from the Pro8. Pro 8 is 240 watts, Sub1 480 watts only driver is the same.  Sub1 123 max dB  Pro8 118dB. Internal cabinet volume is larger on the Sub1 which makes a big difference.  Sub1 is a real subwoofer that kicks.  Pro8 is a mid bass module.

High end and headroom will be better on the Pro8.  Best would be a pair of  Pro8s with a Sub1!

Awesome, thanks for all that detail!  I think I am going to look for a Sub1 to try.

@wweiss  - I have been watching your YouTube channel - sounds like a pair of QSC CP8s with (1 or 2) Bose Sub1s might be even better than S1 or Pro# options in terms of bass + high end head headroom.

Re: Bose L1 Pro8 versus S1 + Sub1

Unless you need the super light weight/form factor, built in Bluetooth, and battery power the S1Pro can not compare with the QSC CP8. S1Pro is really for small gigs, 50 people or less, when you need to turn it up there is zero headroom before clipping/distorting. Two CP8s w/Sub1 would be incredible!  I don't know if you have seen this latest video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nymc8nQLL5w&t=61s  Two QSC K8.2s with a Sub1 or Sub2 would be my ultimate portable rig!  Headroom of K8.2  128dB vs 118dB for Pro8 is a huge difference. Unless you want to spend twice the $$$ but still at the same weight, this is the best I can recommend. Of course at the over $2,000+  price of the QSC rig you can get a Pro32/Sub1. Confused yet?  Either way, incredible systems.

Re: Bose L1 Pro8 versus S1 + Sub1

@wweiss great info, thanks - I had not even considered the Pro32 but as you say the total $s start getting close.  I have owned the S1 and an old K8 in the past and currently have a Pro8.  I sing/play guitar in a small blues/jazz/rock 4-piece band and we used to just have everyone bring their own amplification.  We do small charity work and backyard/outdoor gigs in that 50-150 range (we have done bigger events but they have sound).  Lately I have been wanting to mic up the drums a little and send them through the PA with guitars and vocals (bass has their own cab) so I need a little more rig and will use a mixer.

I currently monitor off my Pro8 but would rather use a floor monitor so I think the CP8 (or a couple) in in the cards just to have that smallest possible monitor.  For mains - either a Pro32 / Sub 1 or QSC pair + Sub 1 are sounding ideal.
