Combo inputs and Phantom Power

Hi there !

For the T1 and T4S/T8S, the inputs can have Phantom Power.

Is the jack input part of the combo input BALANCED ?

I was testing some of my acoustic guitars with a preamp/DI box I have, with another on I have just bought.

I didn’t have a spare XLR-XLR cable at hand but I did have an XLR to balanced TRS cable, so plugged the TRS jack into the combo input. I couldn’t get the phantom power to power my guitar’s DI/Preamp.

So,

1. Is Phantom Power only available to the XLR input part of the Combo input

2. Is the jack input part of the combo inputonly unbalanced ?

It’s not a massive problem, as it’s just a matter of having the right cables, but it’s nice to know either way.

Many thanks (again), in advance !

Yes.

Phantom power is available only through the XLR connection.

Balanced if you use a Tip-Ring-Sleeve jack, unbalanced if you use a Tip-Sleeve jack.

You are welcome.

Re: Combo inputs and Phantom Power

Hi ST,

Thanks for clarifying that.

The Shure “link” seems to be dead/unavailable, or at least from my country, perhaps.

I expect the article maybe describes the origins of the design of phantom power, and maybe, for sake of safety, or something, phantom power has been designed to only be available through XLR sockets ? (as allowing 48V down any mono jack cable might not be seemed a good idea / safe ?)

So perhaps, it’s an “industry standard” delivery of 48V phantom power only to XLR sockets, something you can’t / shouldn’t change ?
