What devices were you using that were affected and what version are they on (e.g. Samsung Galaxy S9 on Android 11, iPhone X on iOS14, etc.)

Detailed description of the issue and steps to reproduce

Hello everybody, I hope my problem has not already been posted.

I have just bought a SUB1 to match it to a pair of S1 Pro. I made the connections according  to the manual instructions: I use a Yamaha MG12XU mixer connected with xlr cables to the each of the sub1 line ins and then I connect the sub1 with xlr cables to the S1 Pros going from each line outs to each speaker. I set up the recommended HPF and LPF. But when I turn on the volume knobs of the S1 Pro speakers I can hear a very disturbing hum noise going only in the S1 and not in the sub1. It is quite light when the volume knobs are at a quarter but when it is set at midday it is very loud.

What environment do you experience the issue in? (e.g. noisy office, quiet kitchen, etc.)

I usually use the S1 Pros connected in xlr to the mixer and I have never experienced such a noise.

When did you start to experience the issue? Did it work correctly previously?

Any troubleshooting steps you took

I have changed the xlr cables and the electric connections (in case it would be a ground loop). I even changed the mixer. But nothing solved the problem.

I wonder if the problem couldn't be from the sub1 itself. I know it is a subwoofer so only spreading bass sounds but for example I can only hear the sounds of the bass and kick drum in it - by the way the sound is not distorted and is even quite good but the fact is that I have the impression that nothing else goes out from it except the bass and kick drum sounds. I know my reflexion seems stupid but who knows!!

So if anybody could help me find a solution.... I thank you in advance for your answers and your help.

Hello Fish-54,

Thank you again for your answer and advise. I saw W.Weiss's videos on Youtube about it and he also gave me a couple of hints to try to find out where the problem could come from. I'm going to consult the Facebook group you mention. Thank you.

Re: Hum noise in my S1 Pro when connected to SUB1

Hello Sandy83,

Just a couple of questions to help diagnose the problem:

  • Do the S1 Pro's still hum if you run them via battery only?
  • Do the S1 Pro's still hum if you disconnect the Yamaha mixer altogether?  (I.e., Sub1 and S1 Pro only, no signal.)

Just trying to determine whether it is am internal power supply issue, or signal issue.

Re: Hum noise in my S1 Pro when connected to SUB1

Hello Fish-54, thank you for your message and your ideas. I have tried every possible solutions just as you said: disconnecting the mixer (S1 and Sub1 alone) even changing the mixer, the xlr cables and types of cables (xlr to jack stereo or mono), the last solution I tried was to connect other speakers than the S1 to the sub to check if there was still this noise. The problem did not disapear. So I am now convinced that the problem comes from the sub. I called my retailer and they had no other solution. So I have decided to send it back for rufund! I am so disappointed because Bose is such good material. This is no luck I think for this time because every other Bose material I have is just perfect. I don't know whether I am going to buy another sub immediately to replace this one because I fear it may be a problem of a faulty series. So I think I am going to wait other people's experiences with this set up to buy the sub again! and I'll continue playing with my S1 Pros alone with no hum noise!! But I'll be curious to have the testimony of other people on this subject if you have ever encountered the same problem or, on the contrary, if you have managed to use the same configuration without any problem. It would definitely encourage me to buy the Sub1 again. Thank you again Fish-54

Re: Hum noise in my S1 Pro when connected to SUB1

Hello again, Sandy83,

Sorry to hear the Sub1 is going back.  I know user wweiss on this forum uses his system in this manner (although he uses two Sub2's with his two S1 Pro's.)  It sounds like there may be a problem with your particular unit, so don't be discouraged.

If you are on Facebook, search for the very active "Bose L1" group there (there are numerous S1 Pro entries there.)  User wweiss recently pictured his system and discussed it there.

Thanks for posting your results.
