Paul Schaefer's L1 Set Up

Today I had the privilege of visiting the David Letterman set and learning more about how Paul Schaefer is using the L1 Classic that you have seen beside him for years. The system is fed by a sub-mix of all of Paul’s keys and synths enabling him to hear himself clearly on stage. The band also has an in-ear monitor mix which enables them to talk among themselves and listen to songs as David Letterman is interviewing guests. There is also a printer attached to the laptop so they can print lyric sheets on the fly. As it turns out much of the material is never rehearsed as a band in advance. Impressive!

More about the L1..Given the extremely tight space on stage the components are connected with a series of customized cables. This enables the power stand and B1 to be positioned under one of Paul’s synths while the Loudspeaker arrays are mounted side by side with a custom bracket. As mentioned elsewhere on the forum members of the team discussed the acoustical considerations; but at the end of the day Paul is very happy with the system. The band is getting ready to support the upcoming Rock n Roll hall of fame inductions and we are hopeful that the L1 Compact may make an appearance..fingers crossed..

Although I did not get to meet Paul I was able to take some up close and personal pictures of the set up which I thought you would enjoy.

Thank you to each and every one of you that makes experiences like this possible.

Very Cool, Neil! Cool

I was hoping he would have put those sections together by now, but I guess they don't want the tower skylining on the set???

Best Wishes,
Jeff

Re: Paul Schaefer's L1 Set Up

Thanks Neil,

It's good to see that behind the facade there is the same ol tangle of wires, boxes, amps, mixers, dust, multiple outlet plugins, as the rest of the worlds musicians use.

I wonder how much mixing takes place on stage and how much in the control room. That seems to be quite an elaborate setup for just the keyboard rig.

That was my initial thought, until I started counting: 5 keyboards/controllers, what looks like at least one or two external sound modules, other external processors, a few pedal controllers (not counting simple keyboard sustain pedals either), a laptop or display, ....
... and the only speakers I saw visible are the L1+B1 -- just for his "personal control booth" area.

I agree, there is quite a bit of gear in that small area. In speaking with the technical director it was clear that Paul was not one for getting into the technical side of modifying patches so I suspect the majority of the mixing is done by the engineer.

I have been waiting for years to see a close up of Pauls's Bose L1 setup. Thanks for sharing that information!
