sound dock with no sound

I have a quite old Bose sound dock for an ipod. It used to work really well then the sound stopped and furthermore the remote stopped working too. However, after looking at various suggestions on the internet (unplugging etc), both the sound and the remote started to work again. Now they have stopped working and I cannot get any joy. I know there is power as the ipod charges and appears to be working when I work it manually. Waht advice can you give me please?
