2x802III from speakerdatabase vs. 2x802III stacked in Aim settings

Hi!

When comparing 2x802III from the speaker database vs. 2x802III stacked in aim selection, the result differs in absolute level and not quite the same field shape - why this difference? (even with the speaker database 2x802III version set to +3dB)

Best regards, Lars

Re: 2x802III from speakerdatabase vs. 2x802III stacked in Aim settings

That is correct Lars. The reason is that polar for 2x802 is measured as a stack pair (16 drivers). When you stack your own 802 in aim selection the individual 802 polars becomes spaced by 336mm and Modeler predicts the behavior of 2 polars, compared to the tight array effect of the 16 drivers in the premade 2x802 speaker file were all drivers are spaced correct.

So stacking single 802's in modeler do not array correctly (due to the 336mm spacing), that's why the 2x802 speaker file was developed.

Same with speakers like 402, that is also a single point polar.

-If you want to calculate the array for combinations like stack 402, the closest you can get is to use 4 similar driver (like a DS40) and then aim them the same as in a 402 and then stack the 4 driver cluster to have a stacked 402 cluster. Nor SPL or coverage will be correct, but the coverage will at least be similar.

Did this answer your question?

Re: 2x802III from speakerdatabase vs. 2x802III stacked in Aim settings

Thanks for the explanation,  Jorgen. I'd only like to add a word of caution when building custom arrays to mimic 402/802, since in the actual product, the drivers do not all receive the same signal. Since the internal filters are not specified, it'll be hard to mimic those in Modeler.

Also, keep in mind that the Panaray balloons are relatively old, e.g. they typically have 10° polar resolution.

best rgds,

Thomas

Re: 2x802III from speakerdatabase vs. 2x802III stacked in Aim settings

Thank you for the info.

So there's no accurate way of using panaray-stacks other than MA-12?

I would like to suggest that speakers with single polars, should be un-stackable, if that makes the SPL and coverage predictions inaccurate.
