Portable Home Speaker spotify connect bug

Hi,

Just got a Portable Home speaker. Got it setup with Bose Music app, updated, and linked to Spotify Premium account.

All is good except that one scenario repeatedly fails:

- I play a Spotify track (managed by Spotify iOS app)

- during that playback, one device sends an Airplay stream to the speaker: it switches to Airplay playback as expected.

- Spotify connect client then gets stuck! No way to play Spotify again 😞

Spotify connect operation can only be restored after a Speaker reboot (long press on play/pause)!...

Is that issue tracked-down, and a firmware fix in the plan?

Thanks

Re: Portable Home Speaker spotify connect bug

Hello wooknoz,

Thanks for reaching out to the Bose Community. Welcome to the site!

I am sorry to hear you are having issues with this. This is certainly a new one for us.

Can you please confirm the following to give us a better insight into the issue:

- What have you named the speaker?

- Do you have any other Airplay 2 compatible devices in the home? If yes, do they have the same device name?

- Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Spotify app?

- Have you tried streaming music from other sources? or does the issue only occur with Spotify?

- Does the issue occur if you use Spotify within the Bose Music app?

- What iOS version is your iPhone/iPad running?

- Does the same issue occur on other iOS devices?

- Does the issue occur if you play via Spotify Connect instead of Airplay 2?

I'll look forward to your reply. For anyone else with a similar setup, are you experiencing the same issues?

Kind regards,

Re: Portable Home Speaker spotify connect bug

It happens also to me on a soundbar 500. When airplay Spotify you should first stop the airplay from the speaker and then change the airplay connection from speaker to anything else (like iPhone), in order to "force" airplay to forget/free the Spotify. After this, Spotify plays OK.

My advise: use Spotify connect instead of airplay; the sound is better, at least for the soundbar 500.

Re: Portable Home Speaker spotify connect bug

@Jeff_G

- What have you named the speaker?

base name: plain Portable Home Speaker

- Do you have any other Airplay 2 compatible devices in the home? If yes, do they have the same device name?

yes several controling devices, no other playback devices: none have same name, anyway

- Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Spotify app?

Yes, no change

- Have you tried streaming music from other sources? or does the issue only occur with Spotify?

did not try with other speaker-embedded services sources. But BT/Airplay do handover nicely.

- Does the issue occur if you use Spotify within the Bose Music app?

yes. Also happens from Browser-based Spotify (Mac/PC)

- What iOS version is your iPhone/iPad running?

iOS 12.x, 13.x, 9.x

- Does the same issue occur on other iOS devices?

Yes: bug is in speaker firmware

- Does the issue occur if you play via Spotify Connect instead of Airplay 2?

It's the handover between Spotify Connect and Airplay that fails!...

Each of these methods play fine alone. If I interrupt Spotify Connect stream with a Airplay2 stream, then Speaker will not be able to play Spotify Connect anymore: full reboot needed.

Can you please try to replicate scenario on a plain commercial device: it should not be difficult, as I encounter that bug 100% of time.

Seems like some other Bose products are impacted (probably same core SW).

Thanks.

FWIW, @Sam_F proposed a workaround here.

Re: Portable Home Speaker spotify connect bug

I just got a brand new Portable Home Speaker and thinking I was buying BOSE would have no issues however it is doing this as well

I ask it (google) to play a track or playlist on Spotify - It says it has found and confirms its going to play and then....  nothing...

Re: Portable Home Speaker spotify connect bug

Hi Zero1,

Thank you for posting and welcome to the community. I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble using Spotify with Google Assistant.

Just to confirm, as features available with voice assistants can vary based on region, what country are you in?

Also, are you able to use Google Assistant for other commands? Does Google respond to any requests, or is it just Spotify that is not working?

To use Spotify with Google Assistant, you do need to have Spotify added as a service in the Google Home app, you can do this by following the instructions found HERE.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Portable Home Speaker spotify connect bug

I'm having the exact same issue that someone else described.

I just purchased the Bose Portable Home Speaker. I can play Spotify by casting from my phone to the speaker, but if I try to use Google Assistant with the command "Play Spotify," I get "Sure, playing your Liked Songs on Spotify. Sorry, I didn't understand." Then nothing happens.

I just got this to replace my Google Home, and I am able to this on there. Very disappointing and frustrating issue. I also can't set a Spotify media alarm, which I normally do every day.

I tried doing the speaker reset as described in the forum, but that didn't work. I've also removed and re-added the speaker from the Bose Music app and Google Home app.
