Bose 601 1977 serial numbers

I have a pair of 1977 601s that I bought new. What serial numbers were issued for the 601s in 1977. I have to think mine are pretty early (but don't know for sure).

Re: Bose 601 1977 serial numbers

Hello Jessie_O

I tried as you suggested and wasn't able to get anywhere since it was requesting my serial number. When I entered my serial number (01472), the database didn't recognize it. Any other thoughts?

Thanks.

Mike

Re: Bose 601 1977 serial numbers

Our current serial number database format only goes back to the mid-90s, mkopf001. I'm sorry, you will be unable to check the serial.

For your information, the 601 series availability dates were:

601 I - 1977-1982

601 II - 1982-1986

601 III - 1986-1994

601 IV - 2001-2004

I can confirm all of these speakers are no longer serviceable due to their age.

I hope this helps!

Re: Bose 601 1977 serial numbers

Thanks Jeff_G! Do you know whether Series I started with serial number 0001? Or where exactly the serial numbers started for Series I.

Thanks.

Re: Bose 601 1977 serial numbers

Thanks for getting back in touch!

I've found the following information regarding our serial numbers/date of manufacture (a.k.a DOM ) codes:

Products introduced before 1996 have the serial number and the date of manufacture on two separate labels.

SERIAL NUMBER (SN)

Before 1996, there was no specific format for serial numbers, though some serial numbers included an abbreviation of the component name in the first six digits, as shown in the bottom left of the example below.

DATE OF MANUFACTURE (DOM)

Before 1996, the DOM label contained the plant information. Example: 09104

Digit Description

1 The Plant Code identified where the item was manufactured

2 – 3 Identified the last two digits of year 19XX when the item was manufactured

4 – 5 Identified the week number when the item was manufactured

I hope this helps!

Re: Bose 601 1977 serial numbers

Thanks for the info on the DOM. I was hopeful when I was ready about the DOM since my serial number is also 5 digits. Unfortunately, this doesn't solve the mystery since my 01479, doesn't match up with either the year or month (unless, of course, there were 79 months back then:-).  Still trying to figure out how early in the production run these speakers were made.

Re: Bose 601 1977 serial numbers

It could be that they did things differently back in the 70s, 01479, more than likely means:

0 = Plant = (not sure which plant this would have been, this isn't documented)

14 = Week = 14th week (April 2, 1979 April 8, 1979)

79 = Year = 1979

Thanks.
