AE2 phone call sound distortion when still connected to Mac

I have my AE2 paired only with my Macbook and Android phone.  With both devices connected, I can listen to music streamed from my Macbook with no problems.  If I accept a phone call, then the audio quality is distorted (digital robotic distortion).  If i disconnect the bluetooth from my Macbook, then the sound instantly clears up.  Or, if i just wait a few minutes, it clears up too.

This happened when I had an iPhone too, so it's not an Android problem.

Similarly, sometimes, when i take the call, I the macbook bluetooth connection will auto-disconnect (i can hear the tone on the AE2s and also see the Bluetooth icon in the Macbook menu bar), then reconnect a second later...then dis/reconnect again.  It will do this about 3-5 times then finally stop trying.  It's annoying to hear the tones in the headphones as it changes connection state.

The sound distortion problem is most important though.  I'd like to not have to disconnect from my mac to take a call.  Any tips?

Re: AE2 phone call sound distortion when still connected to Mac

Update: the issue seems more closely related when connected to multiple "media" devices while also connected to a Call-audio source.  If i turn off at least 1 media connection, the phone call quality improves.  A cell phone uses the AE2 for both call and media audio, so I can simply disable Media Audio on the cell phone and then the AE2 can stay connected to both the laptop and phone with clear phone call audio.

This problem is also on the Soundsport headphones:
