Loud occasional digital noise

i have had the t4 tone match system with the LT2 for years. Recently purchased the t8s with the F1 speakers.

‘When the bank is all ran through the board.  Bass, drums, vocals, piano, guitars.  And we are playing hard, we get a loud digital scrambled noise.  I’ve heard it in another post with similar situation they said it was like an alarm with a dead battery.

‘We tested this.  And was able to replicate it by everyone playing hard and all vocals hitting in microphones hard.

Any idea on what is causing it

Hi Pastor Troy,

Welcome to the Bose Portable PA Community.

EDIT - please follow this link Loud occasional digital noise and if the problem still exists, then continue reading here.

That sounds really unpleasant.

Can you post a video or audio file (as an attachment)?

What's happening on the output meters above the Master Volume control? Are the lights hitting the top showing red?

Are the lights above the trim controls red?

Any idea on what is causing it

Thanks,

Re: Loud occasional digital noise

Hi again Pastor Troy.

If you can save a User Scene and send it as an attachment to your reply here, I'll try to recreate the problem here.

Scenes documentation (applies to T8S too)

Thanks,

Re: Loud occasional digital noise

Hi Pastor Troy,

A warm welcome to the forum from me too.

I take it you mean the T1 in this case as it's not been out for years. This may however not be all that relevant although the T4 and the T8 have much newer technology than the older T1.

‘When the bank is all ran through the board.  Bass, drums, vocals, piano, guitars.  And we are playing hard, we get a loud digital scrambled noise.  I’ve heard it in another post with similar situation they said it was like an alarm with a dead battery.

This sounds very much like a digital circuit being overdriven and distorting. Analog amps/preamps based on valves don't show this anomaly, but do however start to distort earlier than digital ones. This starts as a gentle distortion which many people find to be "warm sounding" until the distortion becomes really apparent. Digital circuits however remain distortion free until a certain threshold is reached. After that they distort in a very horrible way like scratching, as you describe "an alarm with a dead battery."

‘We tested this.  And was able to replicate it by everyone playing hard and all vocals hitting in microphones hard.

Any idea on what is causing it

I may be wrong but this is where I would start looking, especially as you state that you were "able to replicate it by everyone playing hard and all vocals hitting in microphones hard."

Have you checked the output level meters on the front panel when this happens? If you're more than maxing out here you certainly shouldn't expect everything to sound normal.

Have you set up the input gains (trims) on all channels to make sure that your input signals aren't too hot when the loudest signal that each instrument/vocal is present?

Have you tried to mute each channel separately at the parts of the song which are causing problems to see if it's maybe only one channel causing the problem?

Have you tried to record the the main outputs where the problems occur to see if the problem is apparent before you go into the F1's?

You could also try putting the T8 through the L1 Model II analogue input (if you still have it) to see if you're distorting there.

These are just a few suggestions which you may already have tried out, but a long distance diagnosis is always difficult. Getting to the source of a particular problem is quite often a case of trial and error, and trying to isolate the source of the problem.

Maybe this has been of some help and maybe not, but this is how I would be trying to solve the problem/anomaly.

Tony

Re: Loud occasional digital noise

Hi Pastor Troy,

One thing I forgot to ask is what are the signal/clip LED's showing when this happens? Both on the F1's and the T8. If the F1 LED's are showing that you're more than pushing the units hard (not just slightly flickering red but steady), just back them off slightly and see what happens.

Every system will eventually reach its physical limits if pushed hard enough. When this happens and you feel that you're not loud enough,it's usually an indication that you nee a more powerful set up.

Once again, I may be wrong here and you could have some sort of fault with part of your set up, but in trying to determine this I do what I've suggested.

Re: Loud occasional digital noise

Hi Pastor Troy,

Firmware version 1.1.4 includes changes to address the issue of digital noise. Please see:

T4S/T8S Firmware Update Instructions

Does that help?

Re: Loud occasional digital noise

I’ve had a similar experience with a nasty sound happening while running my L1 Compact with too many other electrical instruments on the same circuit.

it sounded like a wet bull fart.

i was just playing music from an iPod.

Im very careful not to share electrical circuits with other equipment.

its never happened since the one time.

Re: Loud occasional digital noise

Hi ST & Everyone...

I too have this problem. My four piece band played a wedding on Friday and we had digital distortion problems all night unfortunately. We were running three vocals, one guitar, an electronic drum kit into one channel and backing track sub mix from my T1 into another channel on the T8s.

Exactly the same problem Pastor Troy described. When we all are playing and the three vocals are singing at once we got a bad squealing digital distortion sound.

I watched the peak lights above each channel on the T8s and they were all monitoring green. I could not see the peak level meter on the input of the L1 stand as it was out of sight unfortunately.

I know the inputs of the T8S are a lot hotter than my old T1… A friend of a friend who also owns the T8S thinks it may be the electronic drum kit distorting as he has had the same problem with his band. I’m going to call him as he is quite a tech head…

Has anyone had any definitive luck with this problem?

kind regards Nick

Re: Loud occasional digital noise

Hi, Nick.

Firmware version 1.1.4 includes changes to address the issue of digital noise. For those following along, there's more information here:

T4S/T8S Firmware Update Instructions

I know we talked about the firmware update a week or so ago.  If you had this problem after having applied the Firmware Update (and doing the factory reset and manually rebuiling any scenes as described in the link above) then please call Bose Support in Australia.

Re: Loud occasional digital noise

Hi ST

Yes unfortunately it still has the problem after the factory reset and the firmware update...

I think i'm going to send it back. I'll might just have one more attempt tonight with my duo and use my drum pedals to see if it handles the Duo.

Kind regardsNick
